Now that the SPM results are out, we are sure that many secondary school leavers are looking for scholarship opportunities to pursue their tertiary education out there. Scholarships are typically given on merit, so receiving one doesn’t just look good on your future career hunt, it will also remove all (if not most) of your financial worries. For those who are looking for scholarships to study in Malaysia, here is the list of scholarships that you could go for. 

 

Shell Malaysia

Application date: 1st March to 5th April 2020

The Shell Scholarship is offering to sponsor 2 tiers A-levels and undergraduates programmes for those who are aiming to do engineering, science and commercial in the tertiary level. To be eligible for the scholarship, candidates must have a minimum of  8As (A/A+) in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) OR excellent O-level grades at IGCSE (A*/A). There are four levels of the application process which are the online application, online assessment, on-demand video interview and the final interview.

Public Service Department / Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam (JPA)

Application date: 9th March until 18th March 2020

Known as the Special Programme for SPM Leavers (Program Khas Lepasan SPM Dalam Negara Tahun 2020), this scholarship is only eligible for Malaysians who managed to rake 9A+ during 2019’s SPM. Candidates will be offered a sponsorship to do their foundation / preparatory level and their first degree at listed local universities, government-linked universities, and local private higher institutions.

The Star Education Fund Scholarship Awards 2020

Closing date: 20th March 2020

Perhaps one of the more wide-ranged scholarships, the Star Education Fund scholarship is offered to Malaysian citizens below the age of 25 years old who possess reasonably good result in their SPM, UEC or STPM and shine in their extra-curricular activities and sports. Among the colleges and universities that collaborated with the Star Media Group under this scholarship are Brickfields Asia College (BAC), HELP University, Monash University Malaysia and Sunway College.

Yayasan UEM Scholarship Programme (for STPM/Matriculation/Foundation Leavers)

Application date: August – September 2020

Offering undergraduate programmes at top public universities in Malaysia, to be eligible for this scholarship, one must obtain a minimum CGPA of 3.50 in STPM, Matriculation or Foundation level. This scholarship will cover all academic expenses including tuition and examination fees, insurance, laptop, subsistence allowance and allocation for books as well as study-related equipment. Among the subjects offered are Business (Finance/Business/ Management/Accounting/Economics), Engineering (Civil/Mechanical/Electrical), IT and Computer Related (Computer Science, Computer System and Networking, Software Engineering, Data Science, Data Engineering) and Actuarial Science.

Khazanah Watan Scholarship Programme 

Application date: 5th March – 23rd March 2020

Staying true to the name (Watan, meaning aboriginal or local), this scholarship is offered for those who are planning to do foundation, undergraduate and postgraduates studies in Yayasan Khazanah’s approved universities in Malaysia. The requirements for each level are different but basically, those who are aiming to pursue their foundation will need to have obtained a minimum of 8As (a combination of A+ and A) in the recent SPM examination or at least 8As in the recent IGCSE. Applicants should also not exceed the age of 18 years old at the time of application.

YTL Foundation Scholarship Programme

Closing date: 31 March every year. Any application that is received after 31 March will be processed the following year.

The YTL Foundation offers up to 30 scholarships every year to aid excellent students who need help to finance their tertiary students. To apply for this scholarship, students have to be a Malaysian student, obtained a minimum of 7As in SPM /IGSCE or Min 3A/ CGPA 3.7 in their SPM or Foundations. Candidates with altruistic and leadership qualities and exceptional grades (8As and above) can also be eligible for The Yeoh Tiong Lay Award, which is awarded only to three students every year.

Kijang Scholarship Bank Negara Malaysia

Application date: 9th March – 16th March 2020

Known as one of the most prestigious scholarships in Malaysia, to be able to apply for this scholarship, candidates must have a minimum 8As (A and A+ only) in the SPM 2019 examination and not exceeding 19 years of age on 1 July 2020. Those who are applying must also exhibit strong leadership qualities, high teamwork capabilities, excel in both extra-curricular activities and sports.

Hong Leong Foundation Scholarship

Application date: 1st April – 31st May 2020

The Hong Leong Foundation Scholarship is open to any Malaysians aged between 17 – 25 years old who are aiming to pursue their tertiary education in local public and private universities. An important thing to note is that, to apply for this scholarship, the candidate’s household income must be RM5,000 and below per month, and they also need to showcase an outstanding SPM result of at least 8As. This scholarship is also available for those who are currently doing their Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Degree programme (Year 1, 2 or 3) in any recognised local colleges and universities as long a minimum CGPA of 3.5, and similar household income as beforementioned.
