About

About

St. Josephs Institution International School Malaysia

Mission
Enabling students, within a Lasallian community, to learn how to learn and to learn how to live, empowering them to become people of integrity and people for others.

Our School Vision and Values: Character Education
“The young should be able to see in your wisdom how they should behave.”
St. John Baptiste De La Salle

At SJIIM, we believe that an important part of Lasallian education is to develop ‘good character’: a set of core ethical values that enables students to, not just be successful in exams, but live fulfilling lives as members of society. As such, our character education programme provides a framework by which we aim to cultivate ‘practical wisdom’ so that members of our community are able to make decisions that are guided by a moral compass, empathy, tolerance and consideration for others.

We understand that, whilst performance virtues (such as resilience, grit and determination) and intellectual virtues ( such as critical thinking and reasoning) are important, for these to be true virtues they need to be guided by moral virtues (compassion, integrity and humility) and civic virtues (community awareness, civility, service).

We believe that:

Good character can be caught through the promoting of positive school values and the development of a culture where people feel respected and valued.
Good character can be taught through the development of classroom activities that provide the vocabulary and means by which students can reflect on their own character and what they can do to improve it.
“Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”
Aristotle

To build good character, as a school, we encourage:

All members of our community to show care for one another and build positive relationships founded on fairness and mutual respect;
All members of our community to contribute to the school in meaningful ways – this includes engaging with service outreach activities;
All members of our community (whether staff, parents or students) to model exemplary behaviour and attitudes;
All members of our community to ensure our school is a clean and safe environment.

We Are Lasallian
Established in August 2016 by LAPIS (Lasallian Asian Partnerships for International Schools) in partnership with Tropicana Corporation Berhad and with the blessings of the Brother Visitor and the Lasallian East Asia District (LEAD) council, St. Joseph’s Institution International School Malaysia (Tropicana PJ Campus) is a brother school of the esteemed St. Joseph’s Institution and St. Joseph’s Institution International School in Singapore.

Being the first SJII in Malaysia, the school is a continuation of St. John Baptist De La Salle’s 300-year-old education mission and focuses on producing well-rounded learners at all levels with its values-centred education approach that is based on the very best of the globally-recognized Lasallian education ethos. With this backbone, SJIIM builds on its brother schools’ extensive history of educational excellence and initiates collaborative learning platforms to encourage sharing of knowledge and resources between the institutions.

SJIIM goes by the tagline of ‘Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve’ and welcomes students of all faiths to be part of its community. From its inception the school has been dedicated to bringing education to all, especially ”the Least, the Last and the Lost’.

SJIIM opened with a record numbers of enrolments for a new school in the tier one category with 430 founding students ushering in a new beginning for Lasallian education in Malaysia. Today, the school has grown even further by leaps and bounds with more than 29 different nationalities of students represented in the school. With the school’s rock solid foundations and elements working in harmony, SJIIM marches towards the aim of being the best international school in Petaling Jaya and Malaysia.

hello. please take this review with a grain of salt, as it is my subjective experience as a student of this school. SJI has a brilliant academic record and really talented and amazing students, but i felt my first year here to be much different (in a negative way) compared to my previous school. this school isn't really international nor diverse in terms of its student composition (most of the students are upper class malaysian chinese from the area), and as a relatively new school i think it really lacks a school spirit, a sense of true community. the school tries to remedy this by implementing a house system for students - but it doesn't work. The extracurricular activities are another missed opportunity - there's little student participation and initiative except for the sports teams. we've had an exodus of teachers this year (almost all the teachers are expats) and i feel there is a general lack of belonging of members of the community, especially with teachers coming and going, and you can really tell this from the school environment (or lack thereof). moreover, the school doesn't have a proper vision for what it wants itself to be, due to ineffective administration. in my opinion (for now), considering the high fees and (alleged) lack of funding due to low enrolment, one would be better off considering other schools for a true international school experience with the relevant diversity and opportunities. we've had a change in school leadership though, so i'm hopeful that the next administration will be able to bring a breath of fresh air and work on bringing the community closer together, as well as the points mentioned above. I believe that the school board of governors and leadership need to fundamentally reconsider their approaches to running this school or at least delegate responsibilities to more capable individuals, because even I, as a humble student at this school, can see so many things they are doing wrong.

Less than a year old, this La Sallian school has blended core values, high academic standards and modern educational methods well. Their elementary classes utilise flexible learning spaces. Top notch.
